The Wonderful Alpaca

The alpaca is a small, domesticated animal that lives in the South American countries of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Chile. The wool, for which it is world-famous, is primarily from the animals that live and thrive in Peru. This animal which looks something like the llama, but is considerably smaller, lives in herds (generally dominated by an alpha male) and grazes on grass at altitudes as high as 16,000 feet above sea level. Obviously, the alpaca is a mountain animal, but they do well in many different climates and elevations.

An interesting fact about the alpaca is that it consumes about 1% to 2% of its total body weight every day. Which is relatively little food as compared to that required by other grazing animals. And, Alpacas don't tear the grass out of the ground; they bite off the tops of the grasses before chewing it up. So, they do very little damage to thier pasturelands, and the grass regrows much more quickly.

Alpaca Sweaters … as good as Cashmere

When it comes to sweaters, it is generally acknowledged by most people that cashmere is the “top of the line.” Cashmere sweaters are incredibly soft, warm and very stylish. But … is a cashmere sweater the very best sweater you can buy? While it’s right at the top of the list in terms of quality, it is not necessarily the best. There is a very capable competitor – alpaca.

The Incredible Warmth of Alpaca Coats

Everyone knows how warm fur coats are and that down-filled coats can fight off the chill of the coldest winter days. The same is true for woolen coats, of course. Far fewer people are familiar with the remarkable comfort and warmth one can feel and enjoy when wearing an alpaca coat. It’s true. Alpaca coats offer warmth that is superior to that derived from wool coats. Moreover, alpaca coats are also stronger and softer than wool coats. Alpaca fur has no lanolin in it so that, when worn, there is no scratchiness or itchiness to bother, annoy and aggravate the person wearing the coat.

Alpaca Wool Socks

There is no doubt that alpacas, mountain-roaming and grazing herd animals exist to help human beings. The fur of the alpaca is lustrous, silky and remarkably comfortable when used in the manufacture of a wide assortment of clothing.

In fact, alpaca is warmer than the wool that comes from sheep and more durable, as well. And while wool has long been used in clothing (often very fine clothing), the fur that is shorn from the bodies of alpacas can be thought of as “a step up in quality.” Yes, alpaca is that good. The alpaca is a small animal that lives in the mountainous regions of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Chile.
